Earwax is a substance present in the inner ear. It has the purpose to protect the air from bacteria and other harmful organisms and also to lubricate the ear canal and ear.
Unfortunately, very often, this substance can accumulate in larger amounts and lead to irritation, itchiness, dizziness, and pain in one or both ears. Some believe that this happens as a result of using cotton swabs to clean the ears, i.e. they push the earwax deeper into the ear canal.
Moreover, people who regularly wear bud headphones and earplugs have higher risk of earwax deposits.
How to Remove Earwax Buildup Naturally
As a precaution, avoid cleaning the ears with cotton swabs and opt for some of the methods presented below:
- Saline solution– dissolve one tsp of salt into a cup of water and then soak a cotton ball in the solution and drop several drops into the ear and tilt the head on one side. Maintain this position for a while until you feel the liquid entering the ear canal. Then, move the head to the opposite direction and catch the liquid with a tissue or a napkin.
- Vinegar and rubbing alcohol– mix equal amounts of these two ingredients and dip a cotton ball in it and drop several drops into each ear.
- Olive oil- drop 3 drops of olive oil into the clogged ear, prior to bed, and sleep on the other side. Repeat this procedure for 4 nights in a row.
- Glycerin– drop 4 drops of glycerin into each ear, 3 times per day.
- Hydrogen peroxide– mix equal amounts of water and peroxide from 3% and then drop several drops into the clogged ear and shake the head gently. Wait for several minutes and then tilt the head to the opposite side in order for the liquid to drain out.
- Paraffin oil– heat 3 tbsp over a candle flame and then drop several drops into the affected ear and lie down for a few minutes. Then, rinse any remaining wax with warm water. Repeat the procedure 3 days in a row for optimal effects.
